Green Campus- Greening Humans is one of the Best Practices of Mary Matha Arts and Science College. The "Green Campus- Greening Humans" stands as a beacon of sustainable practices and environmental education. Committed to fostering a holistic understanding of sustainable living, the program integrates tea production, vegetable cultivation, and community engagement into the fabric of campus life. With a multidisciplinary approach, it provides hands-on learning experiences, promoting a sense of responsibility and environmental consciousness among students. Beyond the college grounds, the initiative extends its positive impact through community outreach, flood relief efforts, and anti-plastic campaigns. Notably, every guest is involved in planting a tree, symbolizing shared responsibility and enhancing the college's commitment to environmental sustainability. The "Green Campus- Greening Humans" initiative serves as a model for holistic, community-driven environmental education, contributing to a cleaner, healthier future.

The practice

As part of our best practice, green campus, we provide students with an in-depth understanding of the tea-making process, from the initial stage of tea leaf plucking to the final stage of tea powder production. Each department's students have the opportunity to actively participate in tea leaf plucking sessions alongside local tea leaf pluckers. The plucking sessions occur every 13-15 days, and students receive training on proper tea leaf plucking techniques. Following the hands-on experience, students witness the transformation of tea leaves into powder during a visit to the Peria Peak industry. To facilitate this educational initiative, Mary Matha College and Peria Peak industry have established a collaborative agreement. This partnership enables students to gain insights into various stages of the tea production process. F9urthermore, students from each department who participate in the industry visit actively share their observations and perspectives with their fellow students back at the college, fostering a collaborative learning environment.

Industrial Visit to Peria Peak As part of this collaboration, students from each department embarked on an enlightening industrial visit to Peria Peak. The industry, known for its expertise in transforming tea leaves into high-quality powder, provided our students with a firsthand look at modern processing techniques. Following the industrial visit, students from each class who participated in the excursion took on the responsibility of sharing their newfound knowledge with their peers. This knowledge exchange ensures that the benefits of the industrial visit are disseminated throughout the student body

Students at our college are doing something really cool! They're growing vegetables right here on our campus. Instead of just having empty spaces, they're turning them into green areas where the students can learn about farming and also have fresh, healthy food. It's a great way to take care of the environment and learn by doing.

In adherence to the principles of best practice for a green campus, a well-structured system has been implemented wherein each department assumes responsibility for the monthly cleaning of the college campus. Under the guidance of the designated teacher in charge of best practices for a sustainable environment, a systematic rotation has been established, allocating each department a specific month for campus cleaning duties.
